“At Gingham Pre-School interest has been shown surrounding planting and growing- to enhance and develop learning interests, we have been planting beans and observing the changes we could see in the flowers too. The children’s curiosity has developed further in the forest school area. From looking for insects to creating muddy mixtures, use of own ideas to complete tasks and overcome challenges were displayed. The children worked together through open ended activities to solve problems such as transporting water and found new ways to do things such as adding water to mud to dig.
Upon using the new climbing equipment, new skills were learnt and as a result children’s confidence was further established. This coming from the children’s ‘Can Do’ attitude to keep on trying- climbing and swinging”

‘Top Dots Stratford showing ‘Can Do’ attitudes, working hard to arrange and problem solve using the tubes and pipes along the fence for balls to run down. Using ideas and achieving what they set out to do by adding resources such as boxes and bowls to collect and catch the balls. Children displayed Sustained Shared Thinking skills to work together and accomplish their plans. ‘

“Polkadot Stratford’s parent join in afternoon was full of Halloween fun! The children and their families enjoyed exploring and experiencing a variety of activities including Halloween pasta play, dressing up, pumpkin carving and making ‘Magic Mixtures’ as well as decorating Halloween themed biscuits and clay decorations. The activities planned were chosen by the children, reflecting on their interests in the setting. The children created their very own ‘Magic Mixtures’ independently choosing resources to fulfil their ideas and curiosity to find out ‘what happened next’. The children created some very gloopy mixtures!! At the end of the afternoon everyone participated in Halloween French with Sophie, enjoying songs and stories- the children demonstrated their French knowledge and learning beautifully.”

“The Buds and Blooms children saw a Hot Air Balloon landing in the field next to the Nursery. They were very excited as they saw the balloon go up and down until it finally landed. They used lots of vocabulary to describe what was happening. Back at Nursery they made some collage balloons, using different materials and had a go at some Paper Mache to make some balloons to hang up. We then made a display in our room, with all the creative artwork”
“The children have been engaging in a variety of planned and child initiated activities, using a wide range of learning techniques.
Exploration of water using different tools and resources to investigate the flow and making predictions about what might happen in different situations has been of interest.
Children have been seeking challenge when using the musical instruments to discover how sounds can be created and changed. They’ve been using their own ideas to accomplish this task with different materials and resources to play the musical instruments.
Practitioners have been encouraging and supporting children to take on risks and challenges, when using the climbing equipment in the Early Years Zone. Many children displaying a ‘can do’ attitude to persist and meet their own goals including climbing higher and balancing on areas they have not before – as a result being very proud of their achievements.
Planting the flowers in the garden proved to be very popular. Children used their own thinking skills to plant the flowers, working together to give ideas and suggestions “if you put your finger in the mud it will make a hole for the flower to grow… look” Together the children planted the flowers, seeking to extend their knowledge by curiously asking questions about the features such as the roots and the leaves. “I think the plants are going to grow into beautiful flowers of all colours”
Other activities at Gingham included Ball Skills in which the children have displayed high levels of engagement. Exploration of colour mixing through sensory painting and investigating the use of ICT resources including cameras. Children and staff have continued to embrace the ‘Curiosity Approach’ through play using real everyday items including food and equipment in role play areas.”
